Modern Furniture Trends & Styles

Whether you are moving into a new home or you simply think that your old home needs a new look, you’ll find that you need to consider what kind of furniture you are bringing in. The wrong kind of furniture makes your room look dated, and if you are not doing up your home with a retro style in mind, you should think about the current furniture styles. Modern furniture is all over the place in terms of looks and textiles, so make sure that you keep a few things in mind when you are shopping.

Straight Lines
Throughout a great deal of modern Western history, furniture has had a very curved shape. These curved shapes might have been organic or they may have been strictly controlled, as in the case of furniture from the turn of the century, but straight lines were considered too simple to be attractive. The modern age has brought about furniture that embraces straight lines and very clear angles. When you start looking for contemporary furniture, look for furniture that allows you to embrace this rather angular aesthetic. For example, when you are looking for an armchair, skip anything that is over-stuffed or which has a high back. Instead choose a chair that is made up of right angles, with firm cushions with sharply-defined corners. This gives you a wonderfully modern look while retaining all of the comfort possible.

Bright Colors
There were many different home furnishing philosophies that stated that the furniture should be as neutral as possible. They stated that the color in the room should come from the art on the walls, not the furniture itself, and today’s modern furniture designers are rejecting that entirely. Why shouldn’t something that you have invested hundreds or even thousands of dollars into be a statement piece? For example, if you have a very dark room, and you want to add a bright pop of color to it, why not think about putting in a cherry red couch? On the other hand, if you are someone who is very interested in open and clear spaces, why not put a sky blue armoire into a room that is otherwise white and blank?

Firm Textures
With most modern furniture, we’re getting away from more fuzzy textures. The velvet and suede is not currently terribly popular, and in its place, we have very slick materials or even materials that look slightly abrasive, though when they are touched they are typically very comfortable. Choose furniture that looks more firm than soft, and which has an obviously woven texture. Sometimes that woven texture is merely printed on. Above all, buy a piece of furniture that is comfortable to you. It is not worth sacrificing comfort to keep up the current trends.

When you are buying furniture, you’ll find that there are plenty of great options out there. It can be very easy to get carried away by everything that you see, so go in with a clear plan in mind. The more clearly you can see the finished room, the better.
