Businesses You Should Reach Out to Prior to Your Move

As you begin the process of reserving the services of local movers, there is more to think about than just packing your bags and relocating to a new house. There are a number of people who should be made aware of your move. To take care of this, many people simply file a change of address location with the local post office. However, before you get started with your moving and storage preparation, there are some additional companies and institutions who you must notify on your own.

Here is a list of some of the businesses you should reach out to prior to your move.
  • Utility Companies
You will need to notify the utility companies not only so that they can turn off services at your old location or transfer them to another name, but so that your services can also be turned on at your new location. This is especially important during months where there are extreme temperatures, such as during the summer and winter seasons. If you arrive at your new home and the house is very hot with no electricity for air conditioning or fans, you and your movers will suffer from heat exhaustion, making it more difficult to get everything done that you need to finish.

  • Banks and Financial Institutions
After you move, the United States Postal Service does not immediately start forwarding your mail. You could risk losing sensitive information, such as your bank statements or credit card information, or getting that information placed in the wrong hands. It is important to not rely on the post office to forward your mail in this situation, and instead, you should make sure that you arrange with your banks directly to have your mail forwarded to your new location.
  • Government Agencies
Government agencies have an obligation to know where people are located and what your current address is. In order to get a new driver’s license, you will need to officially change your address with the Department of Motor Vehicles. This is required by law. You will also need to notify the Internal Revenue Service of your new address so that important tax forms do not get lost in the mail and leave you in a bad situation. To update your address with government agencies, you must go through the process yourself and cannot rely on the post office to do this for you.

Relocating to a different address doesn’t need to be an overwhelming time. By taking the time to hire St. Louis movers or a professional moving company located near your particular area, planning ahead and taking the necessary precautionary measures to ensure your belongings and important information is kept safe, transporting your life to a new location can be filled with excitement rather than stress.
